President, Persatuan Akitek Malaysia (PAM)
It gives me great pleasure to welcome everyone to the Kuala Lumpur Architecture Festival 2016.
Every year we try to introduce something new to the program, but this year is particularly special because the organizing committee with PAM Past President Ar David Teh as the Director of KLAF2016,has incorporated a range of new and exciting programs as well as to unveil a new graphic design for identity of the program.
The committee felt it was important that KLAF becomes more inclusive, to give it more exposure that the program deserves, and to brand it strongly as a PAM driven event. The overall theme of the KLAF 2016 is the celebration of both architecture and design. It is important to recognize that architecture is a part of the larger design community, and we have included other design professions into the KLAF programs this year. Communication design or graphic design will take part in this year program starting with an exhibition by graphic design students and young designers, to enliven and add more colour and excitement tothe festival environment. Besides that we have also included two roundtables to complement our design oriented lectures and exhibition, to discuss the relevant issues pertaining to the profession and the industry, involving the allied professions and the media.
I believe good things must be shared with as many people as possible. For too many years the architecture fraternity, the building and construction industry have been enjoying the twin programs of KLAF and ARCHIDEX. While the public may to visit ARCHIDEX, we have not given the public the opportunity and reason to be part of the architecture celebration. This year for the inaugural PAM Public Lecture, we have invited BapakRidwanKamil the Mayor of Bandungto share with the public his views and experience in planning his city and communities, and issues facing urbanism and the urban community, and how architecture and design is involved in creating a better place for everyone. To complement that, we have also invited a young artist to create an urban installation in the KLCC area for the public to experience as part of the KLAF program.
As for the highlight of the whole week, our DATUMPAM Conference is back with the theme “Future Communities” with Ar Lillian Tay as the Convenor. The speakers invited have been carefully selected by the Convenor to share their experience in creating communities, especially in the developing countries and economies. We have also reorganized the panel discussion session to be more lively and interactive.
Finally I would like to thank in particular the Director of KLAF 2016,Ar David Teh, the Convenor of PAM DATUM, Ar Lillian Tay and all the Convention Committee members for volunteering their time to put together a great program for everyone. It has been an enjoyable experience working with the committee, with meetings ending late into the evenings including during the fasting month of Ramadan. I’m proud to announce we have several new younger graduate architects in the committee who have shared their ideas and introduced new emerging designers to take part in this year’s KLAF. We hope this year will set a new standard for future KLAF and elevate PAM and the profession to a higher level.
